Ashlyn along with three other girls from her strings ensemble, City Strings, were invited to perform at the pre-function at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Allentown at the Arts Ovation Awards, an annual event honoring those who have made an extraordinary impact of the arts in Lehigh Valley community. At first, she thought she was simply invited because she was able to attend. It wasn’t until I asked her to take a look at the company of strings players she was included in that she realized that she was handpicked by her mentor, who was the Arts Ovation Award recipient for Outstanding Educator in the Arts this year. Eyes wide, she turned to me and said, “I must be good, too!” The quartet played several selections together—of which Ash played both violin and cello—and then the quartet broke into duets and solos.

“It was really fun playing for the Arts Ovation Awards, but it seemed as though no one was paying attention to us. It was a cocktail party. We were the background Muzak. We did get to wear name tags. That was cool.
